Fall Tree Care Steps Every Yard Needs
- Look UP! Perform a visual inspection.
Take some time to really look at your trees and their overall health. Pause to give them a critical eye, inspecting the trunk, large branches, overall shape, and leaf health. If you notice anything unusual, unhealthy, or potentially dangerous (like a massive overgrown branch), take a photo with your phone to share with us.
Looking to see what is going on with your trees is the first step in taking proper care of them, for the best long-term health and safety of your trees.
Even if you don’t know what types of trees you have in your yard, fall is a great time to inspect them, so you can see the larger branches through the fallen leaf spaces.
2. Clean Up Debris & Fallen Branches
To keep your yard tidy, it’s always a good idea to pick up branches and twigs that have fallen throughout summer. While we are always available for emergency storm debris clean-ups and large tree branch removals, most people can keep their yard generally cleaned-up on their own.
Small branches and tiny twigs can even be used for backyard campfires or indoor fireplaces during the winter. Going camping? Collect some kindling right in your own yard!
3. Water Trees, When Needed
This fall has been particularly dry in the St. Louis area – we haven’t seen significant rain in several weeks. Dry conditions mean that your trees may need to be watered, even as temperatures cool down. This is especially true for newly planted trees; trees that have been planted within the last few years for most varieties.
Fall is prime-time to pay attention to rainfall. If it hasn’t rained in awhile, give your trees and plants a drink of water. They will appreciate it, and it’s a fall tree care step you shouldn’t miss during dry-spells.
4. Help the Environment – Plant Native Trees!
Fall is a great time to plant new trees in your yard. Before the ground freezes and hardens, you can get perennials and trees established.
